About Salazar Tax Services
Tax Preparation Company in San Benito
When my professor asked me if I wanted to help people prepare their taxes, I had no idea my life was about to change forever.
I started out working in a factory to pay the bills. The job didn’t pay well, the hours were long, and everyone I worked with was looking for something better, including me.
College seemed like a good idea, so I enrolled in the accounting program at Minnesota State. What happened next was totally unexpected.
I was just looking for a way to get a better job, but what I found was a passion to help people and motivation to start my own business.
My grades were always good, so when my professor asked me to be his assistant, I didn’t think anything of it. But when he asked me to volunteer to help low-income residents do their taxes, I didn’t know what to think.
I’m glad I said yes because that experience changed everything.
That was 19 years ago, and that great feeling I got when I helped that first person do their taxes hasn’t faded one bit. As a matter of fact, it’s only gotten stronger.
After graduating, it took some time and my life savings, but in 2012 I finally had enough to go out on my own, and it’s a decision I’ll never regret.
We’re doing something right because we’ve been growing every year since we opened. And I still volunteer to help low-income residents and senior citizens with their taxes.
Recently we expanded into bookkeeping and payroll, but one thing hasn’t changed one bit: we put the customer first.
For us, it’s never been about fancy marketing, ridiculous coupons, or flashy anything. We do great work, and we make things easy.
If you want to know why you should pick us to help with your taxes, bookkeeping, and payroll, the answer is simple. We treat everyone like family and take the time to explain things in plain English.
You have a lot of choices in the Rio Grande Valley, but there’s one thing the internet won’t tell you: who really cares and who’s just trying to make a buck.
If you’re ready for a change, then we’re ready to help you find out why nobody does taxes better than Salazar.
Sincerely

People don’t keep coming back because we make great coffee.
Since 2012, we’ve been the Rio Grande Valley’s best choice for tax, bookkeeping and payroll services. We’ll treat you like family, give you great results, and do it all for a price you can afford.

About Our Tax Preparation Company in San Benito
Ask a tax expert
Where the practice came from, what it takes to earn the EA credential, why the door stays open six days a week through the quiet months, and what happens when a return gets questioned two years on. Call and ask about whatever isn’t here.
Dionicio Salazar III prepares every return at Salazar Tax Services himself, at the San Benito office. He is an Enrolled Agent, credentialed by the IRS, with unlimited rights to represent clients before the IRS, and he has been in the tax business since 2007. The practice has been his own since 2012.
Salazar Tax Services opened in San Benito in 2012, which puts the practice in its fourteenth year. Dionicio Salazar had already been preparing returns since 2007 before opening his own doors, so that is nineteen years in the trade. San Benito, the Resaca City, has kept growing over that stretch, with roughly a third of its homes built in 2000 or later.
An Enrolled Agent passes all three parts of the IRS Special Enrollment Examination within a three year window and clears an IRS suitability and background check. It is a federal credential, which is why an EA working in San Benito can represent a client before any IRS office in the country. Keeping it takes 72 hours of continuing education every three years, at least 16 hours a year including 2 on ethics, with renewal every three years. Texas has no state credential for income tax preparers at all, so the federal one is what carries weight here.
Dionicio Salazar was working in a factory when he went back to school for accounting, first at South Central College and then at Minnesota State University. He came back to the Rio Grande Valley and opened the San Benito practice in 2012, built slowly with his own money. He had found the work volunteering through VITA, preparing free returns for low income families, and was later hired as a site coordinator training students to do the same. Poverty rates across this service area sit between roughly a quarter and a third of households, so free return preparation is not a small thing here.
Because IRS notices, payroll deadlines, amended returns and business filings do not stop in April. Salazar Tax Services runs Monday through Saturday, nine to seven, year-round in San Benito, and answers questions the same day during business hours. Most preparers close after April, which leaves people holding a letter in September with nowhere local to take it. The Winter Texan season runs November into April and the filing rush sits right on top of it, so the quiet months are when a lot of the real work gets done.
The returns get built one year at a time from IRS transcripts, filed in order, and only then does the balance become negotiable. Salazar Tax Services has taken a client through exactly that at the San Benito office, six years of unfiled returns brought current with the balance owed minimized once real numbers replaced the IRS estimates. Substitute returns the IRS files on your behalf leave out deductions and dependents, so a real return usually comes in smaller. An EA can carry both halves of that, the filing and the collection case.
Nothing requires it. Salazar Tax Services carries errors and omissions coverage in San Benito, professional liability insurance that pays the cost of defending and resolving a claim, including help in an IRS disciplinary proceeding. It is a fair thing to ask any preparer about, along with what credential they hold.
Circular 230 is the Treasury Department’s rulebook for anyone who practices before the IRS, setting standards of competence and conduct with a real disciplinary process behind them. Enrolled Agents are bound by it, and an uncredentialed preparer largely is not. That is the practical difference a San Benito client feels when a return gets questioned two years later and the person who signed it is still accountable for it.
